Mission Statement
Alma Flamenca
Is a newly founded tax-exempt, non-profit organization based in beautiful San Diego, California. Our mission is to present the rich art form of Flamenco through teaching and performing its dance, music, and Spanish-language singing. Alma Flamenca will broaden San Diego’s artistic horizon, serving as a hub in the community to share our Spanish heritage, by bringing the most talented local, national and international artists into a Flamenco ensemble. We strive to discover the innate profoundness in this art form and enrich our lives on many levels. Our goal is to make Flamenco more than just entertainment and inspire all members of the community to become a Flamenco enthusiast, especially the younger generations to fall in love with Flamenco and consider it as an artistic discipline.
Our very first accomplishment consisted in establishing the Peña Flamenca Carmen Amaya. A “Peña Flamenca” is typically a Flamenco club, intended to host Flamenco oriented activities, such as concerts, recitals, juergas (Flamenco Parties), and other social gatherings. This venue was ambitioned as the perfect environment to enjoy Flamenco by eliminating restrictions and prerequisites, which is free of exclusiveness and discrimination. A membership is offered at a low monthly rate for adults. Discounts are available for Flamenco teachers and artists. Kids 18 and under can attend free of charge (17 and under should be accompanied by an adult).
Social Impact
Alma Flamenca
Is committed to enrich the lives of young people and adults throught the arts, because we believe the performing arts are the ideal media for breaking down social and cultural barriers.
Our performing and teaching programs feature Spanish culture, but are not limited to artists of Spanish heritage. We promote cross-cultural integration and community by hiring artists of any racial or ethnic background, reaching out to audiences of all backgrounds.
Inclusive programming is at the heart of our mission. We believe in the transformative power of racial equality in the arts to inspire dialog, intercultural understanding, mutual respect, and healing.
We believe the fostering knowledge and appreciation of the rich diversity of the world's music and dance traditions is vital in the pursuit of an inclusive, egaltarian society.
A Message from CEO
- Lakshmi Basile "La Chimi"
I am an international acclaimed bailaora (Flamenco dancer), known by my stage name "La Chimi". I have worked with numerous non-profit organizations for more than twenty years. My participation in many of these non-profit events has been to educate and support inclusion in the arts. I began as a community member, thirsty to learn and promote the art of Flamenco. Now I can validate authenticity, as I provide years of expertise to these organizations and their programs.
